Memorial Day Celebrations & Organic and All Natural Skin Care!

Memorial Day 2016 will be celebrated on Monday, May 30th. Festivities usually equal picnics, parades and other warm weather activities. To get your skin ready for these outdoor events, you need products that protect and rejuvenate the complexion.

Before you expose your complexion to the sun during Memorial Day celebrations, apply a sunscreen to defend against burns and signs of aging.

One of the best parts about spring and summer skin care is the lightweight, sheer formulas that are a breeze to apply. Blu Skin Care's USDA Certified "Organic Whipped Coconut-Green Tea Moisturizer" contains coconut oil which contain properties that may help protect the skin from sun damage. The product is hydrating. When you use this lightweight moisturizer, you won’t have to worry about your makeup running and smudging in the warm weather.

After a long winter, your complexion needs a pick-me-up to create a youthful and healthy appearance. Use products with plenty of vitamin C. This helps fade signs of aging, creates a more even tone and improves collagen production.

One of the tell-tale signs of too much sun exposure is dark spots. To fade this damage and create a healthy complexion that is perfect for spring and summer, use Blu Skin Care's USDA Certified Organic "Oat-Flax Facial Cleanser".  This product contains oatmeal and flaxseed which are known to reduce pigment and inflammation to fade dark spots and sun damage for flawless summer skin.

Which products are essential for your Memorial Day weekend?

Summer is right around the corner. Are you ready?

For most of us, Summer-time usually means sun, shorts, sandals and bathing suits. But with beach hair and shorter hemlines comes the dangers of a higher risk of skin cancer and the aging process. Sun exposure is essentially, subjecting yourself to sun damage – but in the same note, avoiding the outdoors altogether is both impractical and nearly impossible. Taking preventative measures is crucial in keeping your skin in tip-top condition for the ultimate skin-baring season.

Understanding the Dangers of Overexposure

Sun exposure isn’t necessarily bad – it is a key source of Vitamin D. As with all good things, however, keep exposure in moderation. The ideal maximum is 20 minutes before 10 a.m. or after 2 p.m. Anything over is considered overexposure, and any exposure during midday – when the sun is at its harshest – should be limited (if not altogether avoided). Sun rays at this time of day are 10% UVB and 90% UVA: a combination that can cause melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer.

UVA vs. UVB Rays: What’s the difference?

Rays used to be nondescript and UV protection was generalized. More recent and in depth research has shown that there are two kinds of UV rays: - UVA and UVB – rendering standard sunscreens inadequate. Do look for sun blocks that offer protection from both types.

UVA Rays

On average, most people have already been exposed to large amounts of UVA rays throughout their lifetimes. Though less intense than UVB rays, UVA rays are 30–50 times more prevalent and are present during all hours of daylight – even on the cloudiest of days – making it necessary to incorporate SPF protection into your everyday routine.

Wrinkles and sunspots are largely caused by these rays. Able to penetrate glass and deep into the skin, these rays speed up the aging process and contribute to – if not initiate – the development of skin cancers below the surface.

UVB Rays

UVB rays cause sun burns and reddening. While UVA rays penetrate beyond the superficial layers, UVB rays damage the skin’s surface layers. Its intensity differs by time of day, locale, forecast, and season, but still holds potential in causing sun damage. These are the rays responsible for change in darkness of skin pigmentation, age spots, and the more common tumors that may ultimately evolve into cancer

Sun Damage and Aging

Signs associated with aging - wrinkles, freckles, skin thinning, sunspots (also known as age spots), uneven pigmentation – are the aftermath of sun damage. Ninety-percent of wrinkles are caused by the sun, and while intentional overexposure (tanning, sunbathing) is incredibly harmful, two-thirds of all sun damage is surprisingly incidental (walking the dog, jogging or driving).

With that being said sunscreen is not limited to the poolside or beach – it should be applied on a daily basis. Opt for moisturizers and body lotions with SPF, and if possible, always choose a higher SPF for your face. Don’t forget your hands especially when driving. Hands are an instant giveaway to your true age, so invest in a hand cream that offers SPF protection.

Summer Skin Tips

In addition to following these tips, dress to protect. Lightweight, cotton cover-ups along with a cap or broad-brimmed hat will act as shields from harmful UV rays.

Apply USDA Certified Organic sunscreen religiously. It’s a surefire way of protecting your skin. Always apply sunscreen 20 minutes prior to allow time for the product to absorb into the skin; re-apply every few hours or as needed. Look for sunscreens that offer protection for both UVA and UVB rays – keep in mind that a high SPF number is no longer enough.

  • Wash morning and night with a usda certified organic facial wash.
  • USDA Certified Organic Moisturize with SPF. Applying moisturizer with SPF is essential regardless of the season. With the onset of warmer weather, however, consider switching your current moisturizer for another with higher SPF and lighter formulation to prevent sun spots, freckles, and early signs of aging.
  • Don’t skimp on eye creams and lip protection. Sun exposure will gradually thin skin and cause wrinkles. Protect the delicate areas of your face with appropriate creams and balms. Continue to use an eye cream, but if your usual cream feels too heavy for summer, replace your current product with a lighter formulation or use only at night. Apply and liberally re-apply a lip balm with SPF.
  • Protect your hands and feet too. Your neck, chest, and hands are an instant giveaway to your true age. After moisturizing your face  bring it down to your neck as well. Be sure to apply sunscreen to your chest area as it is one of the areas of your body more susceptible to sunburn. Invest in a hand cream that offers SPF protection, and apply it at least 20 minutes before driving – keep in mind that two-thirds of all sun damage is purely incidental.
  • Also, with summer comes open-toed shoes and sandals, so be sure to exfoliate, moisturize, and protect exposed feet as well. Take into account that sunscreen will rub off faster than it would from the rest of your body from rubbing against the straps of your shoes and abrasive sand. Thus, it is recommended to re-apply more frequently to prevent burnt feet.
  • Boost your block with antioxidants. Skincare products containing antioxidants like Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and green tea can help reverse sun damage.
  • Keep hydrated. Drink water throughout the day. If you’re on the go, try bringing a bottle and a container of fresh fruit on the go to prevent dehydration and heat stroke.
  • Exfoliate. Exfoliate according to your skin type.

Cellulite! UGH!

I don't know about you, but I did everything imaginable to try and get rid of those tiny little dimples on my thighs. No matter how skinny I got, they never really went away. I'm so glad that I educated myself and now can exhale. lol There are a lot of nasty rumors out there claiming that you can get rid of cellulite. LIES, LIES all LIES! As I perused through the internet, I ran across this tid bit of information:

Reality: “No cellulite fix is permanent,” says Howard Sobel, a dermatologist in New York City. Some treatments might minimize the look of cellulite, such as creams that contain aminophylline (which helps break down fat cells) and massaging devices that iron out fat cells somewhat so that they don’t appear as pronounced. But these remedies last, at best, a few months. “Even liposuction, which removes excess deep-fat deposits, doesn’t necessarily improve the surface of the skin to the degree where the dimpled effect is invisible,” says Sobel. There is, however, a ray of hope: Cellulaze, a laser treatment that cuts the little vertical bands under the skin that are attributed to the dimpling effect and smooths them out. The treatment recently received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating cellulite long-term, says Barry DiBernardo, a plastic surgeon in Montclair, New Jersey, and the lead clinical investigator of the FDA trials of Cellulaze. But it doesn’t come cheap. The cost can run from $3,000 to $8,000 for the one session that you’ll need.

Hum, I don't think it's worth it. Ha! I think I'll just stick with the few dimples that I have. LOL As long as I stick to a nutritious diet, organic and all natural skin care, exercise, get plenty of rest and stay prayed up...I'll be just fine!

Rituals For Maintaining Perfect Skin using Organic and All Natural Skin Care!

Getting perfect skin isn't hard. You just have to take care of yourself. Remember to stick with USDA CERTIFIED ORGANIC OR NATURAL SKIN CARE/PERSONAL CARE PRODUCTS to receive maximum results.

1. Get enough sleep

Staying up until the wee hours of the morning will results in a tired and worn out look for the skin. In addition to dark circles under your eyes, you’ll also notice that your skin breaks out more.

Make sure you're getting a minimum of  8 hours of sleep EVERY night. If possible make sure you are sleeping during the hours of 10pm-6am, because according to doctors, you'll get the most healing effect. Going to bed early and waking up early is one of the best ways to see a noticeable improvement in your skin.

2. Work-Out

Getting daily exercise to the point of sweating is good for a number of reasons, and of particular interest is how it benefits the skin. Unfortunately for many of us exercise has become something that we do only sporadically, or perhaps not at all.

The skin is the largest organ of the body, and it is capable of absorbing and storing toxins that can make your skin look tired and ragged. A daily sweat helps to release these toxins and gives your skin a new and improved look. Not only that but you’ll just feel better and have more energy as long as you don’t work yourself too much. Your workout should be just enough to get you sweating while still leaving something in the tank to finish the rest of your day.

By exercising every day you’re oxygenating the blood and improving blood flow throughout the entire body, which improves the shape of skin cells and helps them function at their best.

3. Use an Organic or All-Natural Cleanser

Keeping your skin clean is essential, but if you’re using a cleanser that is made up mostly of chemicals you’re doing your skin a disservice. Consider that most cleansers will use different acids and other chemicals in an attempt to “clean” your skin and instead end up causing breakouts and damaging your skin in the process.

While cleanser shopping, look for products that contain organic ingredients, and make sure you recognize and can pronounce any other ingredients that aren’t organic. Also consider the soap that you’re using for the rest of your body, and make sure that it does not contain ingredients you wouldn’t want on your body, because that’s where they end up.

Getting your skin clean is paramount to perfect skin, and using an organic or all-natural cleanser means you’re getting rid of the problem without causing another one.

4. Use an Organic or All-Natural Toner

A toner helps to soothe your skin and therefore you wouldn’t want to use a store bought toner that is not made with organic or natural ingredients. Go with one that is made with natural fruit and vegetable extracts that will nourish your skin instead of wearing it out.

Avoid toners with harsh chemicals in them that are meant to be used as an astringent. Often they will leave behind redness or dry out your skin, working against you and causing you to use other products to try to cover up the redness or handle the dryness.

A toner provides the essential go-between for a cleanser and a moisturizer, and can be the key to flawless looking skin if you use the right kind. Don’t be afraid of using a good quality toner, even if you’ve been scared off by low-grade toners.

5. Use an All-Natural Moisturizer

If you’ve gone moisturizer shopping you’re probably aware that a vast majority of moisturizers have a lot of ingredients in them that you can’t pronounce. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient, it’s most assuredly a chemical, and doesn’t belong on your face.

Remember, your moisturizer should pamper your skin, so look for ingredients that have a calming and moisturizing effect. Each ingredient should serve a purpose and even better should be something that you could eat. The skin is very absorbent, so when you’re rubbing moisturizer all over your body you don’t want that moisturizer to contain things that are harmful to you.

Depending on the type of moisturizer it will either add moisture to your skin, help protect the moisture that’s already there, or both. When the skin is properly moisturized it looks its best and has that special glow to it that you’re after.

6. Drink Enough Water

Being in a dehydrated state is a surefire way to limit how good your skin can look and feel. Aside from making you more energetic and helping your entire body feel better, staying hydrated will provide your skin with the moisture it needs to look and feel its best.

While there’s some debate over how much water you should drink each day to stay hydrated, the best calculation we’ve seen is to take your body weight, divide it in half and drink that number of ounces of water each day. As an added bonus, when you drink more water you help get rid of excess water weight, which will give you a slimmer look and make you feel better all over.

Keeping your body hydrated helps to keep skin supple and smooth. Dry body, dry skin, so be sure that you’re getting your recommended daily water. If you’ve been dehydrated for a long time, increase your water intake gradually to give your body time to adjust to the changes.

7. Use a Face Mask

Don’t save face masks for a once-a-week thing, they should be used daily because your skin has different needs each day and masks can address them.

The best way to treat your skin using a mask is to have a list of face masks to choose from so you’ll be ready for anything. These one-ingredient face masks use all-natural ingredients that you can eat, but that provide plenty of benefits to your skin. Pick the one that goes with the problem you’re experiencing with your skin and you’ll notice a difference overnight.

There are different masks you can make depending on what you skin needs that day. There are hydrating masks, masks that can lessen redness, and others that can help even skin tone. Use them each day so that you’re always giving your skin what it needs.

Skills I Learned From Corporate America!

I worked as an account executive for 7 years in corporate america before starting Blu Skin Care, LLC. Blu manufactures and distributes usda certified organic skin care products. Some of the most valuable lessons that I learned were “getting the job done”, “getting past the gate-keeper” and “selling myself”.  In corporate america, there were no excuses as to why a project wasn’t completed. You were penalized, end of story! The same rings true in self-employment. If you aren’t focused and tenacious enough to get things done, nobody else will..ultimately being penalized.  The years of experience working inside of a really big company has been invaluable in helping me get past the “gate-keeper”. Corporate america is known for spending countless hours on training to help employees master the skill of "cold-calling” which ultimately will get you past the "gate-keeper."  Finally, "selling yourself" is a must. As anyone in a start-up can attest to, is that you have to sell yourself before getting to the next step. People do business with people they like.

What are you buying for Mother's Day? Organic Skin Care Products...maybe?

What do you give to the mother who already has it all? Extra pampering of course. This mother’s day, I think women would like something a little bit more personal and luxurious than the traditional card and candy. I think the absolute best gifts would be any one of my skin care products because they are all USDA certified organic. The seven that any woman, especially mother’s who want to be pampered would love are organic “Oat-Flax Facial Cleanser”, “Organic Honey-Face Mask” , “Organic Lemon-E Toner (Normal or Oily, Combination & Acne Prone Skin), “Organic Whipped Coconut-Green Tea Moisturizer” and the "Organic Almond-Eye Makeup Remover. These gifts are a must have for any mother because who doesn’t want to be pampered? Our products are the finest on the market because they are cruelty-free, made with no parabens, artificial flavors or colors and are non gmo verified.  Our “Oat-Flax Facial Cleanser is the only American-made usda certified organic powdered facial cleanser on the market.

Black Men, Shaving, Organic Skin Care & Hair Cuts!

"What are ingrown hairs?”

Ingrown hairs can be a major problem for black skin types. This is where stubble grows back in on itself after shaving to form small and many times painful "razor bumps”. This can occur in any skin type but is especially common in black skin because of the naturally curly nature of the hair. The easiest way to prevent ingrown hairs is to use an exfoliating face scrub before shaving. The scrub clears away the dead skin cells and debris that interferes with growth. Also, always shave in the direction of hair growth rather than against the grain. This can cause the hairs to become trapped below the skin's surface, resulting in ingrown hairs. If possible, purchase a face scrub that’s organic. I recommend Blu Skin Care’s USDA certified organic "Oat-Flax Facial Cleanser" ($25). It’s an exfoliant but it’s gentle enough to use twice a day. It’s made with oatmeal and flaxseed that does an all-star job of sopping up oil and dirt from the skin.

"DON'T FORGET TO USE A MOISTURIZER AND SUNSCREEN"

There’s a misconception that black people don’t need moisturizer or sun protection. Although, dark skin tones contain more melanin, which has a small amount of natural protection, sunscreen is still needed.

On days when you’re likely to be exposed to the sun for an extended period of time, make sure you use a moisturizer with a minimum SPF-15 sunscreen, A great product is Blu Skin Care’s USDA certified “Organic Whipped Coconut-Green Tea Moisturizer.” It contains coconut oil which is a natural sun protector and moisturizer at the same time.

"Shaving Tips"

  • Applying an all-natural shaving lotion after shaving will reduce the appearance of redness.
  • Be sure to always use a clean blade when shaving with a razor. This can be best achieved by only using new blades and discarding ones that have been previously used three or more times.
  • If you use an electric razor, replace the rotary blades or foil after a few months. Of course if you're required to shave daily, you may have to replace them sooner.
  • While shaving with a handheld razor, always shave in the direction of hair growth. Most hair on men's faces, slant downward, so be sure to shave in that direction. This is also important around the neck areas since shaving against the grain is one of the main causes of pointy, sharp hairs that can burrow back into the skin.
  • Don't stretch your skin while shaving. Pulling your cheeks, chin or neck while shaving in order to get a closer shave, can cause darkness and discoloration of underlying skin tissue. This is especially true for light and fair-skinned Black men who have dark, coarse hair.
  • Watch what you eat. A lot of skin irritations may subside if certain foods are avoided. Fatty foods, foods containing oils, cholesterol and sodium, can make your skin more susceptible to damage while shaving.

"How to use aftershave lotion”

Squeeze or spray a small amount of aftershave into the palm of your hand. Rub your hands together and apply the aftershave to the shaved area, including your neck. Use only a small dime-sized amount to avoid a harsh “cologne" scent.

"How are you cutting your hair?"

Which haircut is right for your skin? At the end of the day it’s all about swag and doing what you love and not what some magazine says. Personality and overall style is something the best hairstylist can’t help you with. Hair grows back. It’s all about having fun with looks and fashion.

Tips on Goal-Setting!

Setting goals are the easy part, sticking to them is something else. God has given each of us visions/dreams. It’s naturally implanted in our hearts. First, write them down. Set a deadline. This makes them visible. Then pray and meditate. After you’ve prayed and still feel the urge to move forward, then pray again with a like-minded community. Your community usually isn’t emotionally attached to your visions and may hear God’s answer clearly. Now, you’re all prayed up and ready to execute your goals. Like anything else in life with execution comes set-backs. Don’t let this stop you. It’s all part of the process. Make sure you plan ahead. Get comfortable with being uncomfortable. As a former Account Executive, I use to be very uncomfortable asking clients for money. As the CEO of Blu Skin Care (Blu manufacturers and distributes usda certified organic skin care products), I ask consumers for money all the time and am comfortable doing it, because I believe in my vision. The beauty about having a God-inspired vision is that it’s something that you feel led to do with ease and no worry.  Remember, you’ve prayed and God has given you the green-light to move forward. Fear and doubt are a part of the process too. Keep pushing. Remember, you prayed and God has opened that door for you. It’s up to you to walk through it.

Oatmeal and Organic Skin Care!

Oatmeal is one of the best natural treatments for dry skin. Rolled oats can be used to make a gentle and effective skin cleanser, facial scrub or soothing face mask. It is an excellent multi-purpose skin care treatment. Oatmeal helps to relieve dryness, restoring natural moisture balance to aid in healing minor irritations due to the many causes and sources of skin sensitivities. Minor skin irritations can be caused by sensitivities to the ingredients in skin care products, exposure to chemicals found in household cleaning products, exfoliation with the wrong product or excessive scrubbing/rubbing during the exfoliation process. Cleansing the face with oatmeal helps to soothe skin irritation and reduce discomfort.

Oatmeal when used as a skin cleanser can absorb and remove surface dirt and impurities while providing very gentle exfoliation, leaving the skin smooth, soft and clean. As a facial mask, oatmeal deep cleanses pores without irritating and drying out the skin. And as a facial scrub, oatmeal gently removes dead skin cells revealing softer and smoother looking skin.

7 Sure Ways to Beat The Heat! Skincare tips for men!

Summer can be so cruel to your skin if you don't take care of it. Follow these suggestions to make sure your skin shines as bright as the sun, even in the scorching heat.

*Sunscreen: Leaving the house in the summer without using sunscreen is sin. Look for a sunscreen which is oil free and at least has a SPF of 30. Apply it every two hours when outside. "Men who don't use sunscreen run the risk of getting sun damage, which results in redness and irritation" says dermatologist Kanchan Mehra. Sunscreen also helps in keeping the skin looking young.

*Cleansing: Due to humidity, skin tends to get oily. Clean your face at least twice a day with a cleanser or face wash. However, try to go as chemical-free as possible. "You can opt for homemade cleansers, like a paste made with raw milk, ripe mashed banana with few drops of lemon or orange juice. Cleansing mix made with fresh aloe vera pulp/juice mixed with lemon juice is another good cleanser to open pores and flush out toxins from skin," says beauty expert Richa Aggarwal.

*Eat healthy: You must have heard that you are what you eat. This may sound cliché, but it's true that your skin is impacted by your diet and the lifestyle choices you make. Avoid oily, fried food. Get your glow with proteins, Vitamin A and C. "A glass of yogurt smoothie with fruits such as strawberries and apple is a great way to start your day," says Mehra.

Make the right lifestyle choices for healthy skin.

*Moisturise: Moisturising your face is a summer essential for good skin. It keeps your skin hyrdated and fresh, and also prevents wrinkles and laugh lines. For natural hydration, use cucumber and tomato juice, which also helps in lightening blemishes and tanning.

*Toner: Spending time out in summer means your skin comes in contact with various pollutants. The pollutants and grime impact our skin's ability to stay elastic. The benefit of using a toner is that it keeps the skin firm and clear. It also helps in reducing the risk of ingrown hairs after shaving.

*Exfoliate: Exfoliation removes dead skin cells on your skin that are a result of exposure to sun and grime. "Exfoliate twice a week if you have oily skin and once a week if you have dry skin. This will reduce ingrown hair and leave the skin fresh," says skin expert Naresh Arora.

*After shave: Your skin is prone to damage after shaving, so use aftershaves. Instead of aftershave creams, use aftershave balms that deal with skin damage, restore lost moisture, reduce sensitivity and soothe skin. Also use rose water to calm irritated skin.

If you follow these quick and easy steps, you're on your way to beautiful and blemish free skin. Enjoy your summer and stay safe.

Hydrate as you celebrate!

June is “African-American Music Appreciation Month”. It was started by President Jimmy Carter back on June 7th, 1979 as “Black Music Month”. It was renamed by President Barack Obama four years ago.

“I call upon public officials, educators, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate activities and programs that raise awareness and foster appreciation of music which is composed, arranged, or performed by African Americans. “ proclaims President Obama.

African Americans have always had a hand in shaping the American sound. From gospel and Motown to bebop and blues, our story is wrapped up in the music we’ve made and love. We’ve written powerful songs of hurt, hardship, yearning and hope for a better day.  If you still aren’t convinced, take a listen to Stevie Wonder’s “Joy Inside My Tears” from the Songs in the Key of Life Album (1976). This song (and album) speaks volumes as to the feelings, struggles and triumph of the African American Community. 39 years later, this critically acclaimed LP is still considered one of the best EVER made. It’s preserved in The National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress which called it “culturally, historically or aesthetically signifiant”. With passion and creativity, African-American performers have channeled music into making change and advancing justice.

Since its inception, many venues, events and establishments have come into being to help the world praise black music traditions. As we celebrate, I want everyone to join in on the commemoration as we enjoy all the festivities, including outdoor concerts.

Naturally, being outdoors can bring oily summer skin as we battle the humidity and the heat. The first step in ensuring healthy brown skin is protection from the sun. If you follow these few skin care tips, you’ll be on your way to a shine and acne proof summer.

Though the average woman of color has a natural SPF of 13 (which means you can stay in the sun without burning 13 times longer than a woman with white skin), we still need to include sunscreen in our daily skin care routine for healthy skin. Sunscreens work by absorbing the harmful ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) rays before they can affect the skin. Sunblocks create a protective barrier that reflects UV rays, causing them to bounce off the skin. For most women of color, a sunscreen with an SPF 15 (which means you can stay in the sun 15 times longer without burning) is sufficient, but if you have certain medical conditions, such as lupus, take certain medications, or have dark marks or skin discolorations, you may need a sunscreen with an SPF 30. If at all possible, look for organic products containing ingredients that protect the skin from both UVA and UVB rays. Why Organic? True natural skincare products are better for your health and the environment. They are produced without mineral oils, parabens, synthetic preservatives, artificial flavors, fragrances or colors.

Sunscreen Tips

    •    All women with brown skin should use sunscreen daily to protect our skin from the sun. We burn too! LOL

    •    Always apply sunscreen 30 minutes before exposure to the sun to allow our skin to absorb the product

Create a protective shield.

    •    Use sunscreen generously on all exposed skin—face, neck and hands. Apply at least a shot glass full.

    •    Store sunscreen away from the sun and heat to prevent spoiling.

    •    Re-apply after vigorous exercise or swimming even if the product is labeled “water proof”.

    •    If a bottle does not have an expiration date, toss it after one year.

Sunscreen in foundation wears off after only a couple of hours so it’s best to apply sunscreen separately, under makeup, or in moisturizers that say SPF 15 on the label.

Another step to care for healthy brown skin is to nurture it. It is important to avoid irritants that may stimulate the production of excessive melanin. Ingredients in soaps, cleansers, toners, moisturizers, astringents, anti-aging products, and anti-acne agents to name a few, are possible irritants. The following is a list of potential irritants to avoid:

    •    Cleansers, toners or astringents containing alcohol, propylene glycol, fragrance, or dyes

    •    Moisturizers containing fragrance, lanolin, dye, alcohol or propylene glycol

    •    Sunscreens containing fragrances

    •    Makeups containing oil

    •    Alpha-hydroxy acid in high concentrations or at certain pHs

    •    Detergents and fabric softeners containing fragrance, dyes, or preservatives

Now that we are aware of ingredients to avoid in maintaining our brown skin, we can concentrate on proper cleansing technique. Many women with brown skin make the mistake of over-cleaning—cleaning the face, neck, elbows and knees too often or too roughly. But most skin care problems (acne, dark marks, clogged pores) are not caused by dirt, so there’s no need to use either harsh products or rough cleansing techniques. The following cleansing techniques will guide us:

1.) Cleanse the face twice a day (morning & night) to remove dirt, oil and makeup

2.) Avoid abrasive cleansers or cleansing products (puffs, loofahs), which can irritate brown skin

3.) Cleanse facial skin with the fingertips and massage gently in a circular motion

4.) Use products designed for your particular skin type: oily, dry, normal, combination, sensitive, acne-prone

5.) Use a toner. It’s important to keep pores closed and skin cool by using a toner

6.) Go for a light moisturizer. Don’t make the mistake of skipping the moisturizing routine altogether as itsessential for the skin to remain hydrated. However, if your regular moisturizer is too oily, go for a water-based one.

7.) Ditch those soft drinks. Most people have the tendency to reach for an ice cold soda to quench their thirst on a really hot day. However, it’s important to remember that these drinks are full of sugar that is not good for the skin or the figure. Instead drink some water made with fresh lime, fresh fruit juices, or coconut water to stay hydrated. It’s also best to minimize the intake of diuretics like alcohol and caffeine as they reduce the water from our system.

8.) Exfoliate. More than the rest of the year, it’s really important to exfoliate the skin in the summer to remove dead skin cells and improve blood circulation to the face. Here’s a really simple organic recipe straight from the kitchen. Use one organic egg white mixed with 2 tsp of organic corn flour. Gently apply on the face. While massaging onto the face, use a gentle circular motionto exfoliate the skin and help the circulation of its deeper layers. Rinse using distilled room temperature water. Pat dry with a towel.

Bonus tip. Don’t forget to eat a balanced diet, work out for at least 45 minutes everyday and get 7 to 8 hours of sleep.

Finally, to properly care for brown skin requires knowledge of its unique structure and properties. Monthly self-examinations and protection from the sun are essential for the health of the skin.  Avoidance of products that irritate brown skin and lead to dark marks are essential.

So, as the summer months temperature rises, fortunately, our skin doesn’t need to take the brunt of the heat this season. As always, stay hydrated. Our body tends to lose a lot of moisture in the summer. So, it’s important to regularly replenish. Drink a lot of water which helps our skin stay soft. Enjoy the African American Music Month festivities. As always, whenever possible, use usda certified organic skin care products.

TIME FOR SPRING CLEANING? SPRING CLEANING TIPS FOR YOUR FACE AND BODY

Spring is the time when many give their homes a top-to-bottom buffing. But while many take the time and energy to clean their homes, their most valuable home—their body, remains neglected. Many of the body’s problems could be solved by just drinking water. It’s the easiest way to clean the body.

According to James R Gavin III, MD, PhD, a noted leader in the field of diabetes "Not drinking enough water could be similar to what we see in people who consume a lot of cholesterol.” Gavin, who is also chair of the Partnership for a Healthier America, an initiative to fight childhood obesity also says a lot of cholesterol and fat in the diet may make some people more susceptible to type 2 diabetes. "Insufficient fluid intake may also influence susceptibility to diabetes," Gavin says.

In addition to diabetes, keeping your body properly hydrated plays an important role in the health and appearance of your skin. Drinking water does not “moisturize” your skin. Drinking plenty of water will, however, keep all of the cells in your body in tip-top condition. Your skin benefits from all of your bodily systems functioning at their best.

And with this, as seasons change, our skin is faced with various different challenges. Significant temperature variations can often take a toll on your skin unless you learn to adapt to them. If the winter season proved to be extremely hard for your skin, the spring season might be your chance to start over in a completely different way. “Today, the sun is brighter than it has been anytime in the last four centuries,” explains Drew Shindell, Ph.D., a scientist at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. “Additionally, the seasons have shifted—spring is longer, summer is longer and fall is longer. This means people are spending more time outdoors. All of these things combined mean seasonless sun protection is crucial.”

As spring time approaches, many of us start making various changes in our routines. Preparing our skin for the new season should be one of them. It’s essential to prepare our skin in order to be able to look our very best at any given moment. Although subtle, a few changes in our skin care rituals can make a great difference in the way our skin looks. Here are a few tips.

If at all possible, start with organic products. Why Organic? Well, we only have one body. It makes sense to care for it wisely. With today's numerous environmental challenges affecting the health and beauty of our environment and our individual health and beauty as well; it is important to select the products we use carefully. Simply stated, organic skincare products are better for your health and the environment. True natural skincare products are made with organic ingredients as nature intended and are produced without mineral oils, parabens, synthetic preservatives, artificial colors and fragrances, GMO botanical sources and otherwise inferior or harmful substances. By shopping for high quality, genuine and natural skincare products made with organic ingredients, this will ensure that you receive wholesome care that is good for your body and your skin.

“Organic is really the only way to go. It is chemical free. Unless you are allergic to a specific ingredient in the product, there is usually no adverse effect. Organic is pure, clean and simple. God has given us everything on this earth to live a wholesome and healthy lifestyle.” Zondra Wilson, founder Blu Skin Care, LLC (www.bluskincare.info)

#1: Stay Hydrated

Your body tends to lose a lot of moisture in the warmer months, which can not only have an adverse effect on your skin, but also on the functions of your whole body. Therefore, it is extremely important that you keep yourself hydrated by drinking water at least 8-10 times a day. Doing so will also make your skin stay moisturized and soft throughout the day.

#2:  Exfoliate

Exfoliating regularly is another essential ritual you should not neglect. Choose a gentle exfoliator that will not irritate the skin and make sure not to over do it.

#3: Moisturize

Moisturizing is by far the most important aspect we should take care of. Although moisturizing regularly is just as important during spring as it is during winter, it is generally smarter to use a little less during the warmer months as to not leave your skin feeling greasy. We recommend Blu Skin Care’s 100% Organic Whipped Coconut-Green Tea Moisturizer (www.bluskincare.info). It is light and moisturizes your skin without leaving it feeling greasy and weighed down. This moisturizer is an excellent sunscreen…blocking up to 90% of the sun’s harmful UVB rays.

#4: Increase Your SPF

To ensure your skin is protected from the sun, use a moisturizer with at least SPF 15, which is perfect for everyday use. If you have fairer skin, you may want to use a sunscreen too or opt for a moisturizer with a higher SPF rating. If you know you are going to spend the day in the sun, keep a sunscreen with you and top up every couple of hours, particularly on areas that are more sensitive to the sun like your nose and lips.

#5: Take Care of Your Lips

And speaking about those lips. Although most of us do our best to protect our face from the sun, little is done for our lips. In fact, a survey showed that only about 37% of women who apply sunscreen on their face pay attention to protecting their lips. Lips are especially important to protect since they don’t have any melanin, which means they are more prone to sun damage. Avoid premature aging, excessive sun exposure and wrinkles by investing in a lip balm that has SPF 15 or higher.

#6: Cleanse Your Face Twice a Day

To avoid breakouts and blocked pores and in addition to exfoliating, a good cleansing routine is extremely important to keep the skin purified and balanced. Cleanse every morning before putting on any makeup. At night, remove every inch of your makeup by using makeup removers and then give your skin a thorough cleanse. Add an exfoliator and toner to the night routine to remove dead skin cells from the surface and any other residue that may have been left behind from your facial cleanser.

#7: Give Yourself a Facial Treatment

Kick-start your spring skincare routine by treating yourself to a facial to hydrate, purify and detox your skin. Since there is a wide variety of facial treatments out there, it can be difficult to decide which one to go for. Decide what type of treatment you want such as anti-aging, dryness, tackling redness or just a general service, and go for that.

#8: Use Oil Instead of Night Cream

For skin concerns like dryness, breakouts, anti-aging and redness, avoid using a night cream and making your skin work hard. Instead, go for a lighter facial oil or light moisturizer, which can get the job done without stressing out your skin. Despite the misconception that facial oils and moisturizers make skin look greasy, if applied correctly, they are extremely effective at soothing the skin while providing barrier protection. Before applying the facial oil/moisturizer or just about anything to your face, make sure your hands are clean. Once you have applied the product, avoid touching your face.

#9: Spray On Spring Water

Spring water has natural minerals that will not only make you look dewy, but also calm your skin. When you sweat, you lose a lot of minerals required for a healthy skin. Spritzing on spring water can help you get those minerals back. These facial mists are like Gatorade for your face.

#10: Diet & Exercise

Last but not least, pay attention to your diet and exercise regimen and strive to make better lifestyle choices. This is another aspect that will have an impact on the way your skin looks. Make sure to include plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables, drink a lot of water and exercise regularly to improve the way your skin looks from within.

If you follow these few and simple steps, it won’t be long before you’re on your way to a better and more luxurious YOU!
